Re: JUST WHEN I WAS STARTING TO CALM DOWN...
Just a
few suggested corrections to this, which ought to be circulated
because
there is a tendency towards anti-Islamic culture in America these
days
that is disturbing and unfounded....other history teachers might weigh
in with
their take on the studies they have done.
First,
Moslems dancing in the streets throughout the Middle East last Tuesday
(and
beyond) tended to fall into two categories, from all I've managed to
read
and learn (including online discussions with Moslems). First, there
were
those in Palestinian-held territories who feel the frustration of not
getting
their homeland. These were very small
compared to what we DID NOT
see. (There was no footage shot of the many
vigils Palestinians held on our
behalf...it
doesn't make as good news show footage.)
Most Palestinians echo
Sadat's
sentiments: This does not move the
prospect of a Palestinian
homeland
forward. In fact, it has, as any casual
observer might see, a
palling
effect on that effort. Our support of
Israel notwithstanding,
Palestinians
have generally recognized that America is the ONLY nation in the
world
the least bit interested in trying to nudge Israel to some middle
ground
on this. We're the only ones with the
credibility with Israel who can
try
that. Regardless of whether they like
it, Moslems who are savvy
understand
that our very support of Israel all these years makes us uniquely
qualified
in all the world to broker negotiations.
Second,
the countries where a majority of Moslems seemed to be "dancing in
the
streets" are conservative Moslem nations that react pretty much this way
(although
without the fanfare) whenever a terrorist attack comes...that is
why
they are conservative nations. They do
indeed hate "the West" but the
reasons
go much deeper than our support of Israel.
The issues to us are
complex,
but they are black-and-white to the residents of these countries.
Involved
are abject poverty, drought, a vast gulf between the haves and
have-nots
in those nations, several generations of colonial rule by England,
civil
war (in Afghanistan) that has dragged on for years...in other words,
sort of
pre-war Germany. History tells us that
Germany blamed Jews for the
German
Great Depression because A.) blaming the real culprit, the Versailles
Peace
Treaty and the nations that forced the economic ruin on Germany by
signing
it, were much too abstract and hard to hit back at; and B.) Jews were
generally
in charge of the financial infrastructure of Germany at the time.
Jews
didn't cause the economic hardship there any more than the U.S. has
caused
the economic hardship in several Moslem nations. Yet as always
happens
in times of crisis, especially economic, the real problems are
abstract
ones and not easily dealt with. A
government looks weak and
inefficient
if it doesn't come up with either solutions (very difficult,
especially
in one-and two-industry countries, such as those in the Middle
East
that rely on oil and agriculture) or come up with a scapegoat. Folks,
we in
America, to the Moslems, are this generation's Jewish population. And,
it is
so much the easier to paint a scapegoat if the population in general is
illiterate.
All
Moslems in the world do not hate America.
Many Islamic nations that are
moderate
appreciate America's economic vitality, while they may reject our
morals
at times. It is important to recognize
this: Jordan, Egypt, Saudi
Arabia,
and other Middle East countries do not despise the U.S. Even Iran,
formerly
a bitter enemy of ours (who could blame them for that--after all, we
did
prop up the oppressive regime of the Shah for many years just to keep the
oil
flowing), is beginning to warm to us slightly.
Iran's support of
military
force against Afghanistan, however, has little to do with any
newfound
coziness, and all to do with Iran's own hatred of the Taliban in
Afghanistan. In fact, of the nations that border Afghanistan,
only Pakistan
would
shudder at the loss of that government.
All other nations on her
borders
would Mardi Gras in the streets joyously if we take the Taliban down.
Uzbekistan especially would be thrilled to
see us make the whole Afghan
country
a crater. I don't know if this is
because they have trouble
navigating
the mountain roads in winter as they drive through on vacation or
what.
This
isn't to say that many Moslems are not happy to see America brought back
to the
pack, as it were. Few of them enjoy
this method, though.
The
history of Vietnam and its victory in war over us probably ranks second
to them
in significance in terms of teaching military doctrine. The Soviet
failure
in Afghanistan is of much more significance--it represents to them a
time
when THEY--MOSLEMS--attacked and defeated a strong opponent. Note that
I did
not say "superior" opponent.
When trying to understand fundamentalist
Islamic
military thought, keep in mind that they do not think like Americans.
This is no "underdog" victory to
them. We tend to root for the
underdog.
Afghans,
and most Moslems, do not think of themselves in that role at all.
It
should come as no surprise to you: This
branch of Moslems believe that it
is not
only proper, but demanded by Allah Himself to show disagreement with a
view
that conflicts with Islam by destroying those who disagree. That is,
they
have taken the sense of "jihad"--holy war--out of its proper (and
widely
recognized,
by most Moslems) place of an intellectual and philosophical
battle
and placed it squarely on the battlefield.
(The historical
antecedents
to this go back to when the Middle East was controlled by a
different
group of Moslems, the descendents of Muhammed himself, and were
taken
over by the barbarian war-mongering Turkish hordes--talk about the
downfall
of Rome at the hands of barbarians...that happened to the Islamic
nations
as well, back a thousand years ago.)
Terrorism
is here, for the foreseeable future, and it is the way an
economically
unstable, relatively small military group--either a country or
an
unaffiliated group--can wage war. I'd
guess we will see tightening
freedoms,
just as we saw in World War II, but for different reasons.
Security,
not availablity of resources, will be the reason. It will be small
consolation
that with every terrorist attack on a western nation (and the
U.S.
won't be the only nation to feel this, if others join in the war) the
resolve
of the rest of the world to rid itself of these latter-day Visigoths
will
strengthen. But it will be the first
war since the War of 1812 that
America
feels the front in its borders. (Hawaii
was a possession, not a
state,
but even so was 3000 miles from the continental U.S. in a time when
there
were no jet engines to provide quick surprise strikes.)
The
sense that Moslems want their religion to take over the world is
post-Cold
War paranoia. We don't worry about
communism taking us over
anymore,
but for some unfathomable reason Americans feel the need to feel
pressed
upon by some dark sinister enemy just waiting to pounce on us.
Moslems
do want to spread their message, which in essence is Judeo-Christian
in
origin with the addition of Muhammed's teachings--Moslems believe in the
prophets
of both the old and new testaments...Muhammed was actually bringing
the
message of Christianity especially to a barbarous Middle East, where
status
depended on the size of one's flock, and thievery to increase one's
flock
was heroic. But hey: So do Christians. Our country was founded by
religious
missionaries, from the Spaniards in Florida to the Puritans in New
England
to the Methodists who went west in the wake of the fur traders, all
trying
to bring Christianity to the "primitives." Moslems desire only to do
the
same...and to the credit of Islam, have not in modern times violently
taken
over a single country in their effort to do so. Can't say that for the
Christians,
or the communists, or for the U.S. for that matter. No, if
anyone
can be suspected of wanting to violently take over the rest of the
world,
Islam would be down near the bottom of the list.
No,
this attack was not "Islamic" or religious in any deep sense. Protect
yourself
mostly from these types of Yellow Journalistic attacks, which we
will
encounter far more often than terrorist attacks. Moslems in
impoverished,
oppressed countries rejoiced because we are an easy
scapegoat--ours
is a standard of living far better than theirs, and that
breeds
envy among those who live below subsistence or long for a land to call
their
own. This was just the act of
psychopaths who use religion as a veneer
to give
an unfounded luster and validity to their barbarousness. We aren't
hunting
Don Quixote, or Columbus, leaders who believed in a cause but were
blind
to the wrongs they pursued. We are
hunting Ted Bundy, Charles Manson.
The
frustration of the oppressed and impoverished, the powerless and the
voiceless,
provides soldiers for the ranks. And
we'll find them. They may
not
like it, but we are America.

Re: Palestinian Encouragement
I was
struck by the view that the US "defeat" in Vietnam was a big source
of
encouragement. If anyone thinks that that war, on foreign
soil and so
fiercely
debated and unsupported by Americans, is a predictor of our resolve
and
abilities in these circumstances, they're mistaken!

ITS
BEEN A WHILE SINCE 9/11, AND IM JUST STARTING TO THINK A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THAT
DAY AND HOW ITS AFFECTING MY LIFE TODAY.
ON
9-11, I WAS SITTING AT MY DESK WATCHING TV AT WORK WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN
THE TRAGGIC NEWS BROKE AND I WAS FLOORED, I CRIED, I FELT LIKE A GOOD
FRIEND HAD PAST AWAY, THAT NIGHT WHEN I
GOT HOME, ALL I DID WAS KINDA MOPE AROUND. WASN'T INTO MOVING INTO MY NEW HOUSE, SO I STARTED
WATCHING THE TUBE WHEN THE PHONE RANG, IT WAS MY CHEIF AT THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT,"RAY, ARE YOU AVAILABLE
TO GO INTO THE CITY TO HELP RESCUE?" BEING WITH THE FIRST RESPONDING TEAM
IN PATTERSON, NY AND INTERIOR FIREMAN, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO SAY YES, I'LL
GO.
WED,
9-12,AM WE ARRIVED GROUND 0, MOSTLY TO HELP OUT NYFD GET
ORGANIZED. IT WAS TOTAL MAYHEM, SEEING HUNDREDS OF FIRE AND RESCUE TEAMS WORK
FRANTICLY, TO SAVE THEIR OWN BROTHERS, GAVE ME THE STRENGTH OF TWO MEN TO HELP MOVE DEBRI.
DAY3,9-13 LITTLE MORE ORGANIZED MORE VOLLENTEERS
REMOVING WHAT WE ALL REMEMBER OF THE TWINS.
9-15,
SAT WE ARRIVED FOR THE LAST TIME, WHAT
HAD HAPPENED FINALLY HIT ME WHEN I FELL INTO A HOLE AND WAS PULLED OUT BY TWO
COPS AND FOUND A FIREMAN FROM LADDER
116, ALL STOP, AND WE PULLED HIM OUT
BODY ONLY OF COURSE, THERE WAS A
LOT MORE THAT I CANNOT TALK ABOUT BECAUSE OF A FEW PEOPLE THAT WE GRADUATED
WITH WERE AFFECTED BY THIS TRADGEDY.
WALKING
OUT OF GROUND 0 SATURDAY OUR DEPT WAS MET
BY CHEERING PEOPLE ALONG THE STREETS COMING UP TO US, SHAKING OUR HANDS
AND BEING THANKED FOR WHAT WE CONTRIBUTED,
MY EMPTY FEELING HAS NOW BEEN FILLED KNOWING THAT I WAS ABLE TO HELP NY
RECOVER THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD, OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS, AND
THE PEOPLE THAT PROTECT US, I WONT BE GOING THERE ANY MORE SINCE THAT SATURDAY,
IT ALL BECAME NYC'S JOB AND EVERY ONE WAS PUT ON PAYROLL,
THANX
FOR LISTNING, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE SPOKEN ABOIUT THIS TIME TO
