Subject: Homecoming Reunion Reminder

As you know, the big reunion this year will be during Homecoming. That's
autumn, so pool parties are out, but Homecoming events should be plentiful.
We are close enough now for those events to be solidifying. Once we are sure
of what's planned outside our group of 70s grads (with the Class of '75
hosting its 35th reunion), we will combine those proceedings with old
sure-fire events and send a follow-up email.

I expect the start times of some happenings will clash with others,
separating us, but things will be set up so once we pick and choose, we
will always have a common place to all end up afterward together.

We already said we should save the dates. Now we are saying please actually
make travel plans if you haven't already.

Thurs, Oct. 21 (optional for earlybirds)
Friday, Oct. 22
Sat. Oct 23
Sun. Oct 24

Here we go...!

I have a limited number of passes to a Paramount Pictures screening
of "Middle Men." If you happen to be in NYC Thursday, August 19, 2010
and would like to see the film, please RSVP ASAP. Screening is at the
Regal E-Walk 13, 247 42nd Street (Between 7th and 8th Ave.) at 6:30 PM.

Synopsis

In 1995, everyone had a VCR, music was sold in record stores, and the
world-wide-web was a new found discovery. Businessman Jack Harris
(Luke Wilson) had the perfect life - a beautiful family and a
successful career fixing problem companies. Then he met Wayne
Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht), two genius
but troubled men, who had invented the way adult entertainment is
sold over the Internet. When Jack agrees to help steer their
business, he soon finds himself caught between a 23 year-old porn
star and the FBI all the while becoming one of the wealthiest
entrepreneurs of his time. Witness a story so outrageous, you won't
believe it's true. A story that proves business is a lot like sex...
getting in is easy, pulling out is hard.

Hi Alan,

I hope this finds you in good spirits. I want to thank you for the RIP list. It's so good to know that my brother Scott has not been forgotten. You know Alan, I don't think I've ever seen a funeral so well attended by so many friends. Scott must of made quite an impact on so many people. I know the girls were crazy about him! It It's nice to see our classmates remembered. You forgot one, I believe. Nate Meznicoff. I totally am not sure on the spelling, or if it's the right name. He passed on soon after my brother, of a brain tumor, I believe.

Anyways, I've noticed a couple names on your missing list. Marjorie McCue, Pam Iafrate, Debbie Pollack, are on Facebook, and I'm in touch with Damian Rieger on a regular basis. You may find a couple more folks on FB as well.

I see you've found Debbie Kupchok. I'm wondering if you can put me in touch with her? I saw her some years back in the nineties, and have often wondered what she's been up to.

I've got to go now. I am going to try like hell to be there for this upcoming reunion. I would also like to thank you for all the work you've put in to keeping this site up and running, and also for keeping everyone up on what's going on. You are a true Brother of Hastings and all our classmates! Thanks Alan!!! Keep up the good work!

Peace and Love,
Jay

Hi Allan,
This is what Val submitted to the NY Times. Feel free to edit it as much as
you think is appropriate. Even just the first sentence and her picture
would be fine. I don't see any reason to say a lot more than anyone else
has said about their parents, unless you find it interesting. I just think
people may remember her because she was a substitute. Thanks a lot.
Best, C.

Jo Mancinelli Shaff died peacefully at the age of 91, on friday July 30 in
Caanan CT. She was surrounded by loved ones.

Maria and Flavio Mancinelli hoped to have a son after the two daughters
that they brought into the world. They selected the name Joseph and awaited
the birth. When the third of their four daughters was born they named her
Josephine. In fact Giuseppina Onda Maria Theresa. As Jo would tell the story
all of her Italian born father's hopes for a son were invested in his tall
(5'11" ) daughter. Jo began to fence at Barringer High in Newark New Jersey.
She was a natural athlete and her skills were honed by the reputed "Doc
Cetrulo" coach of the team. Jo , through her remarkable abilities ,
delivered her team to compete on the college level. Jo was offered
scholarships from various colleges on the merit of her fencing and settled
on NYU where she was pre med. She was the captain of the women's fencing
team and as captain brought her team to win the intercollegiate championship
of 1940.

Though Jo was accepted to the Philadelphia Women's College of Medicine, but
instead married Lou Shaff, a fellow fencer at NYU. With the advent of the
war, Jo used her degree in chemistry to be hired by the Manhattan Project .
She left this work as soon as the first atomic bomb was dropped , joining
forces with the league of scientists that wanted atomic energy to be used
only for the good of mankind. Jo moved on to work as the assistant to the
head of research of Warner Lambert Pharmaceutical company. At the age of 38
she elected to begin a family and had two children, Valerie and eighteen
months later, Corey. As the children matured Jo returned to University
seeking a Masters degree at the age of 54, enabling her to coach fencing on
the college level. She coached saber , traditionally a men's weapon, at John
Jay College of Criminal Justice. She later moved on to SUNY at purchase
where she coached the Fencing team well into her seventies. She also became
certified to teach yoga and taught classes to hundreds students for a
number of years. This continuity and dedication to teaching Lifetime sports
lead to her election to the NYU hall of fame.

An incredible story from "the greatest generation". My mom passed away in 1991 and she was 79. She would be 98 today and I still miss her terribly.. I offer my most sincere condolences on your loss. I don't care how old they are, when you have a great mom who can be the only one that loves you so deeply and so unconditionally, it is a loss like no other. I was just speaking to Coach Howard who also lost his mom recently.
I pray that you have her presence about you and that you remember all of the things she taught you and that it will bring you peace and solace.

Dear Val and Corey, I was deeply saddened to learn of your Mom's passing. I have shared the news with my family who join me in sending our condolences. We have many fond memories of both of your parents. As you know, there was a period of time in which I was essentially a 'fixture' in your house and often felt like it was a second home. During these years, I got to know Jo quite well. The fact that our parents also became friends allowed me to spend more time with all of you, both in your home, and in ours. . I recall one snowy Thanksgiving when we were guests at your family's table on Warren Ave, enjoying your Mom's cooking and everyone's brilliant conversation. Wonderful memories... Most of all, I recall your Mom's unwavering pride, support and love of each of you. to me, she seemed like a tenacious proverbial "Mama Bear" and I know, was much loved in return.
Sending love and sympathy, Leslie (Rau) Herst and family

Dear Val and Corey,

I am so saddened by your loss! I remember your Mom quite well. Always quick with a smile! I lost both my folks, way before their time. My Dad passed away the same day as Jerry Garcia in 1995. My Mom passed in Feb of 2001. I'm just grateful that they saw that I had finally gotten my life together. I still think of them and ocassionally find myself thinking of calling them for advice, or to let them know what's going on in my life. I miss my folks a lot, as I'm sure you do. You are in my thoughts and in my heart. Peace and Love always-Jay

Hi,

After I got out of the Army, I went to SUNY Purchase, and took Jo's
fencing class. She was terrific. Tremendous amount of enthusiasm, and
a lot of fun. There she was, a good bit older than all of us, even
me, the old-timer, and nobody could even come close to her skill
level. I think she 'played' with us, letting us score a few points
occasionally, so we wouldn't all feel totally incompetent. She had
this great energy about her, and she was open and sharing. I felt the
women in the class gravitated to her, knowing that Jo had figured out
what was good in life, and knew how to enjoy it.

At one point, word got out that Jo was giving up teaching. Apparently
it was taking up too much of her time: it was interfering with with
her social life! What a great gal.

Thank you class of '75 for the highly entertaining exchange regarding
procreation. I have been meaning to reply earlier to say that I will
be coming Friday (and maybe Saturday) around midnight or thereabouts
in the hopes of finding some people who are still able to converse
intelligibly......... Failing that I will settle for attempting to
impregnate a post menopausal woman.

After reading the recent barrage of messages I briefly contemplated
canceling my gigs for the weekend in order to giving this "out of
wedlock" conception attempt my best shot. But upon further reflection
I considered that I might do better to show up after midnight,
relatively sober with money in my pocket. :-)

Look forward to seeing you all,

Hi, Alan,

I'm sorry to say I'll be missing the reunion this weekend. My daughter was just accepted into the robotics team at our high school, and they have a competition in Rochester beginning 4 a.m. (when they depart Ithaca) through 8 p.m. Saturday, the 23rd.

I was really looking forward to the Hudsonnette reunion, and catching up with Mr. Morabit and Mr. Weishaus! As well as seeing the rest of the group...oh, well. I look forward to seeing photos and reading stories, and will try again to attend the next Hastings event.

And if anyone has children going to Cornell, get in touch - happy to be a resource while they are here! And if they want to figure skate, I'm recruiting them for the team once they arrive!

And you had better be there Saturday when the mighty Jackets clash against the meek Eagles. A great time was had by all!!

Olberman who has just been screwed by his employer MSMBC. Should Keith give

just because he's on TV? I think he got a raw deal. Hang tough Keith, we

Hi folks,
Seems MSNBC suspended Keith Olbermann from his show.

A petition was started to him back here:

http://act.boldprogressives.org/sign/petition_olbermann/?source=auto-e&referring_akid=2630.202985.uhROc2

I may have political differences with him but to remove him because he
threw some dollars the way of some Democrats is insane for this network.
To take someone off the air who is arguably the most intellectual and
history conscious news person on the air today only dumbs-down the air
waves. We need more like Keith, be they left or right politically.

I don't support the manner in which MSNBC conducted themselves but I can understand why. Don't get me wrong I sincerely respect Keith and will support him in any way that I can, however, there is a danger that someone as influential as Keith may put MSNBC in a compromising position where some of it's audience would believe it is also the political position of the network as well. I know that my position may sound rather naive, however the weight the networks apply during the elections isn't pretty. I don't know about you but I can certainly recall many situations where half truths and just plain mis-representation of both parties have impacted the political sanity to an election (ok maybe sanity isn't the right word). I guess the point I'm trying to make is the more neutral the networks are the better.

Pat, I agree with you ...he didn't lose his job he was suspended, but if it gets closer to a reality of losing his job than we imagine I would offer a trade... lay off Rachel and bring back Keith. I agree that Rachel had some kind words but I struggle to believe that she wrote them. I hope that I didn't tick you off but she's clearly not in the same league as Keith... at least not in my book! I was once an almost nightly viewer of MSNBC but once she hit the air .. as Popeye said " I cant's stands no more"

Subject: Re: Fwd: Re: Keith

There is a certain irony here. Keith told us at the dinner that Juan
Williams at NPR was also in breach of contract AND that he had been
warned several times about his on-air opinions. He thought it was sad
but he said Juan knew what he was doing and was not so innocent.

Keith is, by definition, an "opinion journalist", not a news anchor or
an impartial observer. He openly endorses candidates he supports and
rains fire down on those he doesn't. I'm not sure what the conflict of
interest might be. Keith simply put his money where his mouth is. Pat
could be technically correct as to the formality of the suspension.

So this incident, coming as it does a few days after the biggest
right-wing backlash in US political history, bigger than either 1980 or
1994, has to raise a few eye-brows, especially as it does when GE, the
owner of MSNBC, detests Keith and everything he stands for. So...? So
it's as if they were *looking* for an excuse to reign him in.

I suppose until we can hear directly from Keith we won't know what's up
fully.

Like I said, it is not just Keith's ability to speak truth to power
(truly in his case) but his intellectual capabilities you find only
from, historically, TV personalities like Bill Moyher and William F.
Buckley. Hopefully this will be only a 'suspension' and nothing more.

Oh, trust me..you didn't tick me off...I am not pressing sides. The reality is, no one really know why or what truly happened here. But these shows are political commentary. It's not "news" in the traditional sense of the word -- that is my view and others may disagree. But Rachel Maddow, KO or that twit Hannity and O'Reilly...they either lean to the left or right (don't get me started about Palin) so breach or no breach, why would msnbc really giver a damn if one of their commentary hosts give to the party they so obviously endorse? It seems like a stupid policy for this type of programming.

If I were Griffin, I would have been really TO'd if he gave to that Boehner guy (I prefer the phonetic spelling.).

Goo night and Good luck!

My final thoughts on this:  While I understand the clause in the contract, it's been my broadcast experience that nearly everyone in the industry contributes to candidates.  For whatever reason, Keith has been singled out..  I can't help but wonder if it has something to do with the conversation we had at dinner about The Fox Affair?

I for one believe this was a calculated step on Keith's part to publicly raise the issue of political funding from the media because of what Fox did in this past election by surreptitiously funding candidates through employing them. They also allowed contributions by their employees. I think this was his little way of stepping in and attempting to make the issue more broadly known after the mid-term elections and maybe to take ownership of it. MSNBC should be giving him a raise and not suspending him!

I have huge faith in Keith's intelligence and believe that he's been one step ahead of everybody since the Lewinsky media debacle at least, if not - possibly - going back to his leaving HHS for Hackley. I mean, come on - don't you think he KNEW what the ethics rules were? I admire him for believing in his convictions and being brave enough to act on them. We need more people in the media like him.

I'll still sign the petition, however.

Hey Pat, I too like Rachel's spunkiness, but I must say, she was a little
off the mark on this one. She spent seven minutes attacking Fox News for
their political contributions made by Hannity, Palin, etc. The message she
was sending was, "hey, if they can play dirty, why can't we?"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40028929/ns/politics-decision_2010/
The more she rambled on about the other guys, you know, those bad right
wingers, the more she was undermining her own employers for their actions.
Could you imagine if our society was run this way? Hey, if my neighbor can
get away with it, why can't I? Or maybe we do live in such a society?

Subject: House for sale

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to sell my childhood home in Hastings. Many of us are going
through this now, watching our parents age and move on, while seeing yet
another generation of young people move into the homes we used to call our
own.

Of course the market is horrible - you have to scream to be heard in it. I
am trying to target the 25 - 40 age range -- perhaps a couple or family who
wants to relocate to Westchester from NYC or elsewhere and needs a nice
sized 5 BR/2 Ba house but cannot afford to pay $650K+. Many younger people
are using YouTube, Facebook and using social networking or their own
personal networks/blogs to find homes in addition to MLS sites. I am trying
to find someone that may be sitting on the fence and has specific housing
needs like the desire for a home office or where there would be sectioned
off space for an au pair living arrangement, room for an extended family, or
studio/work room situation.

The house does need some updating/cosmetic work but it has good bones. I
have talked to several contractors and would be happy to relay their
thoughts. My father hired a contractor to build the house in 1962, so I
have all the blueprints, including those with a recent C/O. (Note: The house
is actually larger than what is noted in the tax records (2400 square feet
versus ~ 1600) since the garden level, while half above ground, is
technically a "basement" floor.)

Here's a video link on YouTube and I have attached a flyer, too. It will be
soon be relisted on Houlihan Lawrence.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9HkVkZVAmQ

If you have any other suggestions (blogs, etc.) about where to post, please
let me know.

Thanks and I really appreciate your help.
