Most of the postings lately have been from the class of '75 and have been a lot more fun than the sad postings that preceded them, even for a youngster like me who graduated in 1977. There's a special bond for those of us who grew up in Hastings, and a little deeper level of that bond for those of us who were in the same grade for so many years in school. Tunney Maher was in my grade.

I've been struggling to find the right words to write about Tunney Maher. When I look back on our high school days, I think of the various cliques...the greasers, the stoners, the jocks, the artists, the academics...and while some of us traveled in more than one of them, I can't think of a more universally liked person than Tunney Maher. I also can't think of anyone who so perfectly represented the fabric of Hastings like he did...I think he would have fit right in with the WW I generation, the WW II generation, the Vietnam generation, and he certainly fit in with our generation. There was something timeless about his good nature and I feel we are all diminished by his passing.

Damn.

He deserves more than I can come up with. Here's to Tunney...I didn't really know him well, but I loved him.

He adored this little village of Hastings and involved himself in it fully,
he will be sadly missed.

When I had breast cancer in 2008 I had the best of care --- top NYC
doctors, the means to cover expenses when my insurance stiffed our family for
many thousands - and my prognosis is as good as it can get for a metastatic
disease, damn good.

If I weren't lucky, I'd be dead. It shouldn't be this way in America.

You know, Sidebotham, I spoke with Keith when his mother passed away. I stopped by to see his Dad-it was shortly after I admitted my mother to the hospital the beginning of April of last year; while his Dad and I were chatting Keith called on the cell phone and we spoke briefly.

I would say that I have no more leverage than any one else. If they still have the house on Fenwick, we could send a written invite there and hope he gets it. I don't know how to reach him at work--i used to have his contact info at ESPN but that was a long time ago.

My sense was that Theo was not long for that house.

As I come off Cobra, I hope that I can get health insurance myself and am strategizing ways to do so. Getting a job is one, but I have worked for the evil biopharma industry and start up ventures and we, like other sectors, have been hammered.

This can happen to anyone now--no one is immune.

Anyone need an " admin?"

Dear Mark,

I think you hit the nail on the head. The reality is many kids made his life at Hastings miserable ---

He was always on the edge with his intellect, his level of maturity/age, and his opinions. He did have friends, but overall he was not a popular boy and was often mercilessly teased. I always had a fondness for him.

These are attributes may have helped yield his (relatively recent) success.

What amazes me, when I talk to people down here in conservative Florida about this issue, is how many people resent those with good insurance plans.

Isn't that the way we should ALL be insured? I ask them.

This idiotic "if I don't have it it's bad" mentality will ruin our society.

I was unemployed for 18 months. We paid $800/month from my wife,
Elizebeth's county job. COBRA was WAY too expensive. I'm not working in
the heart of Silicon Valley, outside my profession, as an assembler in
one of those mammoth electronic factories in and around San Jose for
less than half what I used to make (union vs non-union). 10 hours a day,
6 days a week, no rights at all.

As for Keith, I have a lot of respect for his integrity and willingness
to speak truth to power, something rare these days, or, rather,
something that is an extremely mutated form of what the Fourth Estate is
supposed to be about. I don't always agree with him (his bashing of the
recent Senatorial victor from Massachusetts is a case in point) but
overall he is an asset to "opinion journalism", something created in
large part by right-wing populist Lou Dobbs on CNN.

As I may of noted here, I was *forced* to go to two or three of his
birthday parties when I was around 11 years old. This was 1967 and 1968
when many of us were adopting, or rather adapting, too, the rise of the
counter-culture. Keith obviously had one thing in his life: baseball. He
adapted to nothing. Everything else was subordinate to that. Ergo he
came off nerdy. I remember when his mom passed away and he ran a home
movie of he and his family off to Yankee Stadium: there was Keith,
EXACTLY as I had remembered him: shorts, with a short sleeved button-up
shirt *tucked in*!!!, dark shoes, white socks (remember we used to give

Of course all that was water under the bridge when he came to the 20th

I'm hoping he will take time out to get to the next reunion, if I can't

Dave, like you, I remember Keith in middle school (at least I think it was
middle school...seems so long ago). Keith did have a passion for baseball.
He carried a Baseball almanac around and I believe he memorized every page.
It was quite impressive. Yes, he was a little quirky and nerdy...but
weren't we all in our own way. I, myself, buttoned my shirt (also tucked

Wow, these email strings brought back quite a few memories. I remember Keith loving in addition to Baseball... Walnetto's. Does anyone remember those? Caramel with that nuclear center I believe. Occasionally, I used to buy them at Mandricks (when I had the money) and shared them with Keith, I got a kick from his reaction... Walnetto's he said, in his low pitched voice. Keith was quite a character but beneath it all (nerdy or not) he was cool in his own right.
Oh yeah... no one picked on him when Vinny Potenzo and I were around (the River Rats lived backed then !!... products of our neighborhood were we)

Success comes in many forms, but being valuable as a person not only to our jobs but to society, to share such an experience with so many is hard to come by ... Keith achieved that

I have been reading this string of emails and have been thinking of an appropriate response to the discussions going on about Keith. Personally I don't remember him from school days however I am a huge supporter.

When the class of 74 was planning our 10th reunion many years ago, my Mom ran into another classmates Mom at the A&P in Hastings. She asked Mrs "_" if her son was planning on attending the reunion. Her response was "no one treated him nicely in school back then, why would he want to attend now"? I have to tell you, my heart sank when my mother called me to tell me this. I truly hoped I was not one of the people she referred to. Well - this classmate did come - and when I saw him - I approached him immediately with a warm welcome and hug and sat and spoke with him for a while. Actually I spoke with him more that evening than I had ever spoken to him in HS. I found he had matured into a very nice guy (or maybe I did) - yes quirky - but still a nice guy. Others felt the same way. He came to a few other reunions but we have lost touch with him now - but we are still searching for him.

Our class of 74 I think is extremely unique (or should I say most classes from HoH). I think if you asked any of our classmates they will say the same thing. We actually have grown even closer over the last few years. (Of course FB has has been a great tool for this). Maybe it's just old age setting in or maybe our kids are mostly grown and beginning their own journey into adulthood which leaves us with more time to socialize with each other. But what is most clear to us and we speak about it often - although we ran in different circles and may not have been in the same "click" we have now matured into adults and whether it be our quirky natures or our interests back then - it does not seem to matter in the least bit. We just love to be around each other and try to see each other as often as possible.

What I'm trying to say is - it doesn't matter what your preferences were in high school. If you were a Hastings classmate...you are part of our famiy. We are all adults now and I'm sure you will all agree - we are supporters of each other. Whether it be to vote for a childs art project or come together for prayer for a family member or just to be there for a good laugh or shoulder to cry on. There are not many people you will meet today that can say the same about their High School classmates. Most of my associates and "outside" friends are always suprised about how close we are.

I know that many of you were there for me then...and are still there for me today. I thank all of you for the memories and the future ...

Well said. We were all lucky to have grown up in such a progressive town.
That small part of our lives pales in significance to the rest of our
experiences, yet it still forms a large part of how we see the world (and we
are better people for it). We were just kids then, and did things that we
would never consider now (how stupid I was!). However, for all the ups and
downs I might have had there, I never regretted any part of the experience.
It's funny how IMPORTANT trivial things seemed back then. No one should
ever feel unwelcome at any reunion. At the last 1976 reunion I went to, we
had people from lots of different classes and cliques gathered around, some
talking for the very first time. Yet, even if you had never spoken with
them before, they remembered things about you back then that you found
surprising. There is some unspoken connection between people who have had
the "Hastings" experience.

Who remembers the "do the right thing" speech that Mr. Rittner gave at the
end of his history class? I can only echo the wisdom he was trying to share
with us then. Having experienced the current educational system here for
many years, I can't even imagine that happening. We had some really good
teachers back then. Too bad we weren't always the best students.

entertain differences without bitterness and contempt..maybe even finding ways

Corey,

Hey, wish I can take the credit but I believe it was Pat S. who had the H2O in her subject line. I'm simply not that clever to come up with things the town would use...

Pat, see what you started ! Now I'm thinking through this "water thing" and joining in the ranks with Greg. So I ask, isn't it technically dihydrogen monoxide?

The use of numerical prefixes is typical nomenclature for compounds formed by covelant bonds, which are present in water. The prefix for the first named element is often dropped if the elements involved commonly form only one compound, however, two hydrogen atoms combined with other elements (i.e. carbon) can form multiple compounds so the numerical value for the hydrogen element stays. The mono- prefix is often dropped for the second-named element if it is the only common compound the elements form. Since O with no numerical value is too unstable and only O2 can bond to form the water molecule the numeric value is dropped.

I need a life, I need a drink ! And probably not H2O !

Subject: Mr. Bennett Vs. Mr. Nelson

But Ricky, Mr. Bennett was easy compared to Big Bob Nelson. A very good
teacher, and much more patient than Mr. B, who could often be seen
rushing from class to the 3rd floor pay phone lest he miss the 7th at
Aqueduct... But Bob Nelson was a disciplinarian, and possessed a very
effective deterrent capability. He lays claim to THE most painful
college-ring-head-knock-giver ever. Dude must've worn like a size 15
ring with a 3 carat gem. He'd turn it stone side in, cruise the aisles
as he taught class, and would basically drop his thick finger (adorned
with said deterrent device down) down onto your head if you did anything
but pay close attention. It hurt like hell. And God forbid your mouth
was open when that damn rock dropped onto your cranium: the sound was
straight out of a cartoon and would pass thru your mouth and resonate
througout the entire classroom. Emmm-barrassing! And freakin' hilarious
too- - any of our brothers and sisters lucky enough to have heard that
marvelous sound is grinning if not laughing right now at this auditory
memory... If you were gonna talk, doodle, pass notes, window gaze,
chick gaze, whatever, you simply had to know where in the room Mr.
Nelson was. Even that was no guarantee of safety, as he'd see you and
circle back on ya later when you least expected it. Damn stealthy for a
big man.

Isn't it great that stuff like that could happen back then without a
Federal case being made out of it? No big story on News 12, no teachers
getting canned, no lawyers involved. No one was a victim. Dear God, do
we have too much of that crap now or what?

Back in the day, most of our parents were happy to let our teachers do
whatever. I know mine did. Well heck, they knew me :-) And they knew
most of our teachers cared and really were worthy of their trust. But
sometimes, even they got it wrong. When we were in 3rd grade together,
Ellen Gunther Fioro victimized me at a water fountain on the second
floor of Hillside school. We laugh about it to this day. We were fooling
around and someone got wet or something. In an extremely rare instance
where I was NOT actually to blame, Ellen was. But our teacher (Mrs.
Apple), figured I had to be the evildoer (I guess Larry Nichol was out
sick :-), and actually stepped forward and slapped me square across the
face. This was no love tap, let me tell ya. I still remember the sting.
I guess I should have been shocked, but back then? Not really. You just
went on with the day.

"Hi Mom, I'm home. Today at school, Mrs. Apple slapped me across the
face so hard I think her hand print is still there, see it? I didn't
even do anything!" "Well Edward (the serious name), you'll probably do
something bad this week, and this way, Mrs. Apple has simply paid it
forward"... I mean, I guess it had to be something like that, right?

Good times! Any other good teacher stories out there? This could be a
fun thread...

Warm regards,

Westrell would put his arms out around the imaginary turkey, potatoes,

As far as Mr. Bennett goes, he decided, for whatever reason, that I was too
smart for his class so he never made me do any work and had me act as his
assistant almost when we had class experiments and such. Funny, he came to
me as a senior and asked me how I did in Science after his class and I
told him I always had straight A's, and he said he was relieved. He had

As long as we're talking about wrestling, it was Pete Westrell who was the
varsity wrestling coach. Here's a man that new virtually nothing about
wrestling but decided to learn it quick. Probably the best coach I have had
of any sport and a good man besides. I heard he had some health
problems...is this true? By the way, I have to thank Dave Virrill and Alan
Fine for introducing me to school sports. There's peer pressure and then
there are peers who help others...I like the latter.

I still think the Time, Space and Matter class I had with Mr Westrell (7th? 8th?) was one of the best classes of my life. It was much more about how to think and solve a problem than learn content.

Miss Barton, singing and dancing along with the Christmas carols on the PA system "Do you hear what I hear..."

Mr Riggs pronouncing his name - "It's not Wrigglewits its RigLAYvich."

Mrs Dowd's arms quivering when she wrote on the board - the image inspires me at the gym to work triceps and try to stave off the dreaded "math teacher arms."

Too much chatting in 7th grade English caused Mr Eckleman to assign 100 word essays on a poster on his wall. "Use kind words in abundance." I dug out the thesaurus and came up with over 80 of positive adjectives "Dear, sweet, kind, considerate...... Mr Eckleman. Since I have used kind words in abundance, please give me an 'A' on this paper." It worked!

One of my favorite teachers was Mrs. Klidjian. She had a baby after 9th grade, but since I went to Dobbs, I don't know if she returned. Does anyone know anything more about her?

Julie,
Thanks to my mother, I have proof that you were not the only one of us who
had a beef with Mr. McGuiness.

My Mom, Rose, had a tradition of creating a memory album for each of our
40th birthdays. She kept all sorts of things -- from report cards and school
class photos, to letters from camp and even pages from a scrapbook I made in
7th grade and thought I had thrown out in high school. She presented it to
me when I went to visit her in May, 1997 (the last time I saw her, but I
didn't know that at the time). The McGuiness part came after I looked
through the whole thing and we had a wonderful trip together down memory
lane. She then handed me a piece of paper -- she must have gotten it out of
my pants pocket when she did the laundry. When did we have McGuiness -- 7th
grade; 8th grade? Anyhow, she gave it to me saying: "This is a mystery paper
that was in your pile, but I must have made a mistake, it must be Judi's." I
confessed it was mine.

It was a group poem at least 2 of us wrote -- 2 lines each -- entitled "A
Poem for Mr. M." Is it mean and crude -- a classic adolescent item. Rose and
I had a good laugh together over how, even when I was 40, she didn't think I
had ever cursed or done anything mean. The first line has "J" written next
to it -- hence my mother's thought it was my sister Judi's. The third line
has an "M" next to it. I don't recall who the "J" was who started it.
Perhaps you? Perhaps Jean -- she did try to make me tougher back then. "M"
might have been for "me" -- don't know. I do remember why I had it. When he
turned back from the board, we stuffed it into the open cubby of the lab
table, where I sat. I forgot something when I left class. I went back to the
classroom and saw Mr. McGuiness sitting in my chair reading it. I left the
room again, made noise, re-entered, said I forgot something, got the book or
purse I left, and grabbed the note, which he had placed back in the cubby.

It remains tucked under the pink, quilted, lacy cover at the back of Rose's
album of my childhood, a tangible reminder of the transition that is
adolescence.

Wow, reading all of these stories and reminiscenses today has been a
blast. I hope they keep coming, it seems that one begets another.

Like others who've commented about him, I loved Pete Westrell and had a
special relationship with him. A brilliant teacher who could reach
anyone, and as Andre said, a natural as our Wrestling Coach. I've been
fortunate to run into him many times over the years, but it's been a
couple since the last. I know he's local, I do think he lives in Dobbs.
Last time we spoke he told me he was helping put together Hastings/Dobbs
Curling team in a league that started in Westchester. He always keeps in
good shape, looked great when I saw him last.

As you may recall, back in the day Pete drove a VW Beetle. What I
remember most about it was how cold it was in the winter... Pete wanted
to help me wrestle, so he used to drive me home after practice. This was
during the depths of winter and his veedub evidently had no heat. But
hey, it sure beat walking from HS to Marianna Drive at 6pm in February.
I was blessed to be wrestling at 155lbs on the varsity team as a
freshman. At 14 years old, this was only 5 years out from open heart
surgery. That's the blessed part. Getting to hang with the Belarge
twins, Nicky McMaster, Chris Squillante, Donny Maher, Joey Pagan, Kit
Ryan, George Morabit, Allan Fine, Chris Griggs, and the rest of the team
as lowly freshman? Well, that part was just magical. Some of the best
fun I've ever had, and all with Westrell at the helm.

Earl, yeah, I was born with 2 congenital heart defects, a "VSD" and a
pinched artery that reduced the flow of blood out of my heart. They
knew from the day I arrived. Serious defects but they had to wait until
I was 9 years old to correct them- - being genetic they could've
reappeared if repaired before the heart matured. It happened during 2nd
grade. My teacher Mrs. Weitzner was so nice to me during the whole
year, what a sweet and caring lady she was. She actually arranged to
have most of the class come to visit me in the hospital, something quite
a few old claasmates tell me they still remember. As do I.

The day I woke up from the operation, I saw my parents staring anxiously
at me through the walls of an oxygen tent. In a faint whisper, I asked
them if I'd been hit by a truck :-) Quite an experience for a young
kid, and life shaping. I learned at a very young age that I am
resilient as hell, and could hang with the best of 'em when things got
truly hairy. Within a few years, doctors who knew me only as sickly kid
really could not believe their eyes. I was operated on by a great
pediatic heart surgeon named Dr. Maum, famous now as a teaching Doctor
who went on to train literally hundreds of young cardio surgeons who no
doubt went on to help kids just like me go on to live normal, healthy,
long lives. Like Jane in her battle against Cancer, I was lucky to have
had the very best care, the best of everything. My dad worked for IBM
and like most big companies back then the medical plan was top notch,
and cheap. I shudder to think about trying to go through open heart
surgery now, and from so many standpoints. Happily, my heart defects
weren't passed on to either of my 2 daughters, something I'd always
remained concerned about until I knew for sure they were ok.

Luckily mine were fixable defects and I've never had any heart disease.
While there at the pedatric cardio unit of Babies Hospital in 1967 (for
almost 2 months), I got to know lots of other kids, including 2 other
boys who were not nearly as fortunate as I. Some including these 2 had
defects or disease way beyond anything I suffered. Some did not go home
again.

However in my own case, within just a year of the surgery Mrs. Apple was
OK to slap me silly at that 2nd floor water fountain at Hillside School.
Talk about your miraculous recovery :-) I guess it's true that what
doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. If you let it.

Subject: HASTINGS EMAIL - CLARIFICATION OF POLICY

As you can imagine, in the ten year history of this email forum,
people have subscribed and unsubscribed. Invariably, the unsubscribing
happens when members hold private chats in public. That is happening
now. As a result, I have received multiple annoyance complaints, both
from members and my Internet Service Provider. To build a strong
membership base and keep people from withdrawing, I have promised to
state/reiterate the mission of this email forum...

The purpose of this forum is give us a safe, private place to quickly
and easily communicate with a large group of friends, teachers and
classmates. It allows for very immediate calls-to-action. In this way,
we can rally together in good times and bad, and maybe do a little
group healing when needed after the bad times (as in the recent
reminiscing about our lives in Hastings; I intend to move these to our
website as part of David Virrill's "Hastings Memories" and "Teacher
Tributes" at this link:
http://www.art-cetera.com/hastings/memories ).

This forum was not designed for chit chat among individuals. Facebook is far more suited
for that. (Also Facebook has a "hide" button which we do not have.)

That said, please remember new members are joining who don't know the ropes here yet, so
it would be great if more seasoned members could be tolerant. Hopefully we all realize over time it is better to delete
unwanted emails and stay connected than to withdraw from so much friendship and goodwill.

As long as I'm writing, I would like to mention we can get rid of weird characters like "=" and "=20"
if we send messages as "PLAIN TEXT." If your email comes through with those characters, please
investigate this.

Also, please delete any messages below your own when you post, otherwise
I have to remove them myself or the string of messages keeps repeating
when viewed in the online forum archive (http://www.art-cetera.com/hastings/messages)

A SIDE NOTE: My Internet Service Provider informed me I'M ONLY ALLOWED TO SEND 1000
EMAILS AN HOUR (7 emails x 143 members = 1001 emails) OR BE CUT OFF AS A SPAMMER.
That bothered me because I HATE spammers and I'm just trying to provide a
service for my friends. Regardless, please spread the word about this forum so our membership continues
to grow. If it does, I'll figure something with my ISP, because I am very proud to be a part of this group and
I will do whatever I can to help it thrive.

And finally... I want to say I truly appreciate the thanks people have expressed here.
