Hey Ray

We just finished putting our oldest son through Davidson College in NC to
the tune of 40K+ PER YEAR and now son # 2 is attending the same school!
Fortunately, son #1 is getting his MBA tuition paid for at Stony Brook on LI by
working as a graduate assistant coaching football .....nothing comes cheap!

Doug,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write those kind words.

May I remind everyone that Doug is a fine musician with a band. If you visit the Alumni Scrapbook at www.art-cetera.com/hastings, you will get to hear some of his CD.

That is about halfway down the page. Now newly added at the top of that page are stories there about Steve Bass raising all sorts of money for Public Broadcasting. But better than that, like Doug, he's still making music. There is a brand new article and a picture worth seeing of Steve playing clarinet for the OREGON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA!

Keep it up, classmates. Keep making things happen so we can chronicle it on our website.

I will take this opportunity to plug a gig. If any Hastings
transplants in the Nor Cal area want to check out my band, we will be
playing the Crows Nest, by the beach in Santa Cruz, on March 7th at
9:30.

Doug,
Thanks for letting us know! I'll be in Tahoe that night, otherwise we'd try
to come down for it. In the small world category, I'm pretty sure the Crow's
Nest is owned by a really great guy -- Ted Burke -- who is the cousin of my
husband (Dennis Cusack).
Have a good time on 3/7. Do let us know about other gigs for us transplants.
Cheers,
Louise Francis

Subject: HHS Alumni Party - Save The Date - Sat night 6-7-8

Hey there, Class of '75 and friends. I just wanted to let everybody know
that The Hastings Youth Council is sponsoring an HHS Alumni Party on Sat
night, June 7. Please save the date and start spreading the word. Last
year we had a good 150 people or so at our party at the school. Let's get
even more this year and let's get a big variety of people from different
eras. Here are the details:

When: Sat night, June 7, 2008 from 7:30 PM until 11PM
Where: The new James Harmon Community Center in Hastings

Food and Drink: This year, we get to serve alcohol since it won't be at the
school. So we'll be serving beer and wine in addition to the non-alcoholic
stuff. For food, we're just going to serve light food like chicken wings,
maybe a six foot wedge, fruit platters, veggie platters, cheese platters,
chips, etc. So there will be enough for you to have dinner, but it's not
really a dinner event.

Fundraiser: The party is free to attend, but this is sponsored by The
Hastings Youth Council and is a fundraiser. We'd appreciate it if everybody
attending would contribute at least $20. Beer and wine will be sold
separately.

The Council really needs money to support its programs. One prime example.
We have this beautiful new community center and lots of kids are using it.
However, there is not enough money in the village budget to keep it open
late hours. The new center should be open until 10 Mon through Thur and
until 11 on Fridays and Saturdays, but it isn't. If we can raise some
money, then we'll get some more staff to keep the Community Center open more
hours. For a very small amount of money, we can provide a great place for
people to hang out six nights a week.

So please contribute what you can. The money we raise will help fund the
very facility where the party is being held. At the party, we encourage you
to all look around the new center.

Please mark the date on your calendar and spread the word. I look forward
to seeing you there.

Subject: Tibet

Friends, classmates & fellow Hastings grads,

Over the years we have learned about many valuable activities of our
classmates to make the world a better place. I hope you'll take a moment to
read about my family's contribution.

For the past 10 years my family has devoted much time and resources to
support the struggle of the Tibetan people for greater human rights. My
husband, Dennis Cusack, has advocated on behalf of the Tibetans to the
United Nations, has run a Tibet Support Group called Tibet Justice Center,
and, has written a book -- Tibet's War of Peace -- which he recently
published. Tibet's War of Peace is an account of the non-violent movement of
the Dalai Lama, Tibetans, and their western supporters. I wish I could say I
did all that, but someone had to do the laundry, focus on our sons and act
as Dennis' coach, cheering section, marketing department, reader, advisor,
etc.

March 10 is "Uprising Day" in the world of modern Tibetans. It marks the
uprisings in Llasa in 1959 to protect the then young Dalai Lama from what
was believed to be (and likely was given subsequent events) a Chinese plan
to imprison or kill him. This year, with the world's eye on China's Beijing
Olympics, Tibetans are again rising up. Tibetans are telling the world that
they are not going to give up their fight against China's systematic and
often brutal work to eradicate Tibetan culture. You can find stories about
these uprisings in the NYTimes and other places on the internet.

Westerners can start to support these freedom fighters by learning the facts
of Chinese oppression of Tibetans and spreading the word about these facts
to counter Chinese propaganda that Tibet has always been a part of China and
Tibetans are better off and happy under Chinese rule. As with South Africa
under apartheid, this is a world-wide movement for change. Every additional
supporter counts.

So if you have been reading about the protests in Tibet in the news and want
to know more; if you are just interested in what is perhaps the world's
best-known but least understood contemporary nonviolent campaign; or if you
want to join the movement -- you can start by reading "Tibet's War of Peace"
by Dennis Cusack. You can find it on amazon.com. This is not a money-maker
for us. It is a labor of love and a passion to educate other westerners and
by that education support a people who deserve the freedom to keep their
culture, beliefs and land.

Even if you don't read Dennis' book, please do think of supporting the
Tibetans in exile who live in your community, of joining protests this year
that highlight China's human rights abuses, or undertaking other activities
that support greater freedom for Tibetans and all those under Chinese rule.

Thanks for listening,
Louise Francis (Class of 1975)

Subject: Hastings Website Patron Has Big Day

Teri, my wife and the artist responsible for hosting our class site on "art-cetera.com" had a rare day today. Selling a painting isn't big news, but learning of three separate sales in one day is!

One was bought by the Ruths Chris Steak House in Dallas, another was a commission by a patron in Chappaqua,
and the third was an English collector who bought a painting for her apartment in Johannesburg (must be nice...).

On another note...

Louise, Teri and I have a "Save Tibet" sticker on our car and give to the cause. Please congratulate Dennis for finishing his book and yourself for making it through.

Thanks so much, Louise, for the work you and Dennis do and for letting us know. I've been supporting a nun in exile through the Tibetan Nun's Project (tnp,.org) for several years. Growing up with such wealth and privilege in the US, it boggles the mind to hear about the dangers and hardships of the Tibetan people at home and in exile. I look forward to reading Dennis' book.
Best wishes, Alison Krafft Rempel

Congrats on your wife's success!
Are those pictures posted somewhere so if I end up at a Ruth's Chris in
Dallas I can look for it?

Any idea where to get a "Save Tibet" sticker from an organization that
will actually use the money to help Tibetans?
