Here's the scoop on this email from an "insider."  This is not anything

that's current.  This same message has been going around the web for more

than 5 years and seems to pop up again every few months.  There is no ruling

before the Supreme Court right now that has any impact on public

broadcasting or NEA funding.  However, a positive letter to your member of

Congress or Senator is always helpful.

Regards to all from Music City USA.

I wondered if our PBS affiliate in Nashville was going to weigh in on this

subject.  Although out of radio a long time now, I do try to keep up on the

"biz" here and there and had not heard anything about this.  And Steve, I

knew a couple of people in NPR and PBS and their inside scoop is that, even

without Federal funding, they would still be able to operate (although on a

drastically reduced creative level--not nearly so many new PBS programs,

etc....and those guys from cars.com work for peanuts anyway so nobody has to

pay them anything...lol)  True?  One of them even said he felt that public

support (i.e., fundraisers) would be more successful without government

funding at the levels it is at now (although I personally don't see how it

would offset a major reduction of funding)...

Anybody hear the discussion with international news correspondents on Sunday

regarding Bush and Clinton's effect on the world?  Apparently Bill Clinton is

extremely popular in France--the host mentioned that she had heard that

Clinton could run for President there.  The La Monde correspondent confirmed

this on the basis that Clinton, from Arkansas (a part of the old French

possession that included what we call the Louisiana Purchase), is a resident

of a former French colony and so is technically eligible for the Presidency.

When pressed, the La Monde correspondent added, "But he wouldn't win.  He

can't speak French."  There was some brief exchange about him not having the

patience to learn French and then a moment almost buried under the hubbub

when one of the correspondents added something that inferred that he already

knew French and the host of the show moved on to the next topic as a couple

of the correspondents apparently got the risque joke...

Long live NPR, the only counterbalance to Rush and the rest.  However, I'd

like to see Juan Williams replaced...he doesn't seem to care about what

anyone else says as long as he gets his two cents in.  He also conducts

rather shallow interviews.  I'd still like to hear Click and Clack the Tappet

brothers do TOTN.  There's a programming fix guaranteed to bring ratings.

Subject: RE: NPR AND PBS

I don't believe that either the public television or radio systems in this

country would exist as they do now without government support.  Both systems

provide universal coverage, even to places that have more cows than people.

No commercially-supported entity would do that.

It would also have a significant detrimental impact on programming, since

federal dollars are very often the seed money that gets things rolling.  It

would be particularly hard hitting on the pre-school programming service,

which is a lifeline for millions of parents and kids.

However, I do think that it would be possible for some stations to survive

in some manner -- and perhaps thrive -- as some sort of non-profit,

commercial stations.  But that's not possible under current laws and FCC

policies, and their programming would likely be pretty different than it is

now.

Thanks for weighing in.

Well, I met Bill yesterday, while having lunch in the Chappaqua coffee

house.  He looked great, was very friendly, and tied up traffic in town for

about an hour. I shook his hand, flirted with the Secret Service, took my

friend's picture, and left.  It was even more exciting than watching Nixon

drive through Hastings!
