Hi all,
I agree, it is a nice idea. For our 20th I held money for the reunion in my
client escrow account. I'd be happy to do that again, but does anyone know
if the Hastings school fund is a not-for-profit organization, or know who
the contact person is? If it is, we may be able to use it as a conduit for
memorial fund money and be able to get a tax deduction as well. It may help
to make fundraising easier.
What do you think?

Greetings to everyone -
I've been reluctant to join in on this point about the mural but I guess I should.
My sister teaches art in Hastings and I know from her that she was involved with some restoration issues regarding the mural a few years back. I just haven't had a chance to find out from her what the resolution was and what research was done (I had recommended some American Paintings dealers to speak to for reliable conservators). I do have to say that while this is a wonderful gesture to make, I don't know how realistic it is for us to raise anything that might come close to picking up the tab for such work. It could conceivably cost tens of thousands to restore it properly. I work with conservators frequently so I know how expensive this work can be....
All the best,

Eric,
I'm a Board member of the Hastings Education Foundation. We have had money come
through us for various special projects BUT they were projects that the school
was on board with and all of the facts were known. Let's find out what the facts
on the restoration are first and then talk to the School Board and Foundation
Board. Yes, the Foundation is not-for-profit, so all cotributions are tax-deductible!

No doubt you are more knowledgeable in the field of art restoration than
most of us. However, there are many options in how to restore, or at
least stabilize, this piece for future generations.
Perhaps other classes would like to join us in this en devour. Maybe
even get the Antique Road Show involved. Our class has a lot of brain
power, once we put our noggins together I am sure we can come up with
some positive course of action.

Unfortunately, I am going to be pretty much unavailable the weekend of our reunion so I'll stay in touch with Alan in case there's a meeting to discuss the project....

Friends,
Can't believe we're supposed to clear our slates and make time to be together again in just over a month. Like many of you, I don't know how I will. Still, I'll try.
For months I have been meaning to post 33 new pictures in our Alumni Scrapbook, but I have been too busy. With our reunion fast approaching, I could no longer keep this on the bottom of my list of things to do. So please visit www.art-cetera.com/hastings and view the new "Steven Jones" wing of our humble Hastings museum. How many faces can YOU name?
Send more pictures, or bring them with you to show at the Columbus Day Weekend events. Speaking of which, please familiarize yourself with the list of tentative meeting places for that weekend by visiting our site.
Finally, could someone please put together a phone calling team to personally speak with and invite those on our class list on the website who do not have email addresses, and to help collect those addresses for our database?
Thank you,
Alan

Gang,
Barbara Thompson, the president of the Hastings Historical Society, says she'll be happy to open their facility at 407 Broadway over the weekend for us. But I'm not sure we have the room then.
Their normal hours are Mondays 10AM to 2PM and they will be open on that holiday Monday. If we can use the three-day weekend to show up Monday, we won't have to put them out. That is my suggestion, because that would leave Sunday afternoon open for a walk behind Hillside School to Sugar pond.
If on the other hand, people aren't as interested in Hillside, are leaving Monday, and would prefer to visit the Historical Society on Sunday, they should speak up.
So please check the website for a tentative activity lineup and email your opinions so we can solidify this.
Thanks,
Alan
PS. While we're at it, Nancy (S.G.), could you please lock up a school tour for us Saturday morning, 10/8/05, and Reynolds or Zinsser Field for a picnic and softball that afternoon? Thanks! She's the best, folks!

What I didn't mention in my last communication was that in 1985, I bumped

when Tom Landry brought some respect to the game.
He referred to himself then as Jack, not Jock. The latter is probably
appropriate considering his chosen vocation at the time...

Bridge
A Life of Cards Began With a Missed Slam at 15
By Phillip Alder
8 September 2005
Alan Truscott, who died on Sunday after 41 years as the bridge columnist of The New York Times, found out about bridge at Whitgift School in Croydon, London, when he was 15. He instructed three friends to read a book, and the next Thursday they had their initial game. On the first deal his partner opened one spade. He responded three clubs, a strong jump shift, and his partner passed. His partner hadn't read far enough into the book. To make matters worse, Truscott won 12 tricks and was furious at the missed slam. But 12 years later this friend had represented England and Truscott had played for Britain in a European championship.
Truscott's trail to the United States germinated in 1960 when he was spotted by Dick Frey working in the press room at the inaugural World Team Olympiad in Turin, Italy. Frey was the editor of the American Contract Bridge League's monthly Bulletin. The seed sprouted the next year when Truscott was a member of the British team that won the European championship. They qualified for the 1962 Bermuda Bowl in New York City. Britain finished third of four, but afterward Frey invited Truscott to his Long Island home and asked him to become his deputy editor and to write the first edition of The Encyclopedia of Bridge.
Truscott returned to England, where he had been eking out a living by writing, teaching and organizing bridge, settled his affairs and nine months later sailed for the United States on the Queen Mary.
Another big break came in 1964 when Albert H. Morehead retired as the bridge columnist for The New York Times, and Truscott was invited to take over.
In 1972 Truscott married Dorothy Hayden, one of the greatest female players of all time. He proposed to her outside the Taj Mahal.
Truscott had many successes at the table, wrote several books and invented some useful bidding conventions. For example, if partner opens one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double, a response of two no-trump shows at least a limit raise in partner's suit. (This is sometimes incorrectly called Jordan.)
He had an incredible memory, particularly for song lyrics, and a great desire to succeed, which he showed in 1986 when he completed the New York City marathon at 61.
At the bridge table he liked the Symmetric Relay bidding system. When his side had game or slam values, one player made meaningless one-step inquiry bids and his partner described his hand exactly, sometimes even down to the jacks.
Truscott added to bridge theory by describing the principle of restricted choice. This is highlighted in the diagramed deal. South has bid aggressively to seven hearts. He wins the first trick with his spade ace and guesses to play a trump to dummy's ace, collecting West's queen. When East plays low on the next heart lead, should declarer finesse, assuming West had a singleton queen, or should he rise with the king, playing West for the doubleton queen-jack?
The principle of restricted choice says that it is correct to assume your opponent's choice was restricted. If West had a singleton queen, he had no choice of card to play. If he had the doubleton queen-jack, he might have played the jack instead of the queen. So the percentage play is to finesse on the second round.

people who are safe. There are no listings for a Mark Sheridan in New
Orleans. That includes his wife Joanne, and two sons, Patrick and Daniel.
There is an email listed for him. I am afraid he may not remember me, does
anyone want to try to email. This way we can see if he is okay and needs any
help. Warmly, Nicole aka Niki Michaelides

I emailed him as well, at both addresses listed on our website. Let's hope he's just too busy saving lives to register on a safe list and/or respond to emails...

Subject: Please contact these people?
As you know, postcards about our reunion went out months ago
to every person on our database with a street address.
(Some didn't have street addresses though. Please help with those.)
That mailing allowed us to update our database a bit. Since then,
we have asked people to look the list over and to contact
those without email addresses or other contact information.
Now really is the "zero" hour. Please visit the class database at
http://www.art-cetera.com/hastings/html/HASTINGS_1.html
PLEASE CONTACT FRIENDS YOU WISH TO SEE AT THE REUNION.
DO NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT THEY ARE COMING.
CALL AND MAKE SURE!

Below is a list of classmates whose emails are now bouncing back. Anyone know their new email addresses?
Thanks for participating and see you soon,

Subject: Mark Sheridan is OK
Here is the email I received tonight - I can only imagine what he's been through...
Nancy,
Thanks for your e-mail. As you may know, I am a state trooper and my wife is in the Louisiana National Guard. We both have been working 18 hour days since the Hurricane hit. Our two sons are staying with relatives in Huntsville, Texas and they are fine. I was working as the state police liason with the National Guard when the Hurricane came directly over the operaton center. Our house is on post and all of the homes received five feet of water (some were completely destroyed). After leaving the army post, I went with the National Guard to the Superdome. I was the only trooper there for three days. It was pretty bad. Luckily thousands of police officers from around the country have arrived to help.
After things settle down, we are planning on building a new house on high ground (no where near water).
Let everyone know that I am fine.
Mark

Subject: Phone number
My phone number on the class database is incorrect. It's 616 302 5812--a zero
instead of a one in that middle section there. Hey, Jamie and Barry, (and anyone
else so inclined), give me a ring and we can make our plans for the reunion!
